Yanmar YM2 Series Overview

While all three use Yanmar diesel engines, the YM238 is the only model equipped with a turbocharger, providing additional torque and improved performance at higher elevations.

All three models use Yanmar's Synchronized Reverser Transmission (SRT) with 8 forward and 8 reverse speeds. The synchronized reverser allows the operator to quickly change between forward and reverse, making repetitive tasks such as loader work more convenient while retaining the pulling characteristics of a gear-drive transmission.

The tractors also feature selectable four-wheel drive and a rear differential lock for additional traction when conditions get slippery. Across all three models, fuel capacity is 10.5 gallons, while top travel speed is approximately 12.6 mph.

YL405 Front-End Loader

Loader performance is one of the strongest features of the Yanmar YM2 Series. All three models use Yanmar's YL405 front-end loader, meaning even the 24.4-horsepower YM225 gets the same loader capability as the higher-horsepower YM232 and YM238.

The YL405 comes equipped with a 72-inch bucket and a universal skid-steer-style attachment system, making it easy to switch between compatible buckets, pallet forks, grapples, and other front-mounted attachments. Maximum lift height is approximately 88 inches, with a 1,500-pound lift capacity at full height and 2,500 pounds of breakout force.

Those are substantial loader specifications for this size of tractor, particularly on the lower-horsepower YM225. Because the same loader is used across the lineup, buyers don't have to move into one of the higher-horsepower models simply to gain additional front-loader capacity.

NOTE: The YL405 also features a quick-release design, allowing the entire loader assembly to be removed from the tractor when it isn't needed. Built-in stands support the loader during removal, while the cradle pins and hydraulic connections allow it to be disconnected from the tractor.

3-Point Hitch, PTO & Lift Capacity

At the rear of the YM2 Series is a Category 1 three-point hitch capable of lifting 2,205 pounds at the pivot point and 1,609 pounds at 24 inches behind the pivot point. Combined with a 540 RPM rear PTO, the YM2 can handle a wide range of common compact-tractor implements, including rotary cutters, box blades, tillers, grading equipment, and other property-maintenance attachments.

The YM2 tractors do not come standard with rear hydraulic remotes, although additional hydraulic lines can be added for implements that require them. Yanmar does include several useful features at the rear of the tractor, including a retractable drawbar, quick-pin adjustable sway bars on the lower links, and a hydraulic-fluid sight glass for quickly checking fluid levels.

Lift capacity also helps distinguish the YM2 from some of Yanmar's other compact tractors. When compared with the similarly powered SA425 and YT235, the YM2 offers several hundred pounds more front-loader lift capacity. The operator station starts with a mostly flat floorboard covered by rubber mats, providing plenty of legroom and grip while working. A high-back seat with armrests sits on a spring suspension platform, while the brakes, clutch, throttle, four-wheel-drive lever, heel-operated differential lock, and three-point rate-of-drop control are all positioned within easy reach.

To the operator's left are the high and low transmission range selector and PTO engagement lever. On the right are the three-point control, loader joystick, cup holder, storage tray, and a 12-volt charging port with a small compartment for a phone or other items. The steering-column area keeps things equally straightforward, with a simple display and easy access to the throttle, headlights, turn signals, hazards, and other commonly used controls.

Many of the controls are constructed from metal and have a sturdy, mechanical feel without being difficult to operate. Features such as the rubber floor mats, high-back seat with armrests, integrated loader controls, and practical storage help the YM2 feel more refined than its value-focused positioning might suggest.

Overall, the YM2 keeps the operator station simple and functional without feeling bare-bones, which fits the tractor's broader focus on providing strong capability without unnecessary complexity.

Yanmar YM2 Dimensions & Weight

The YM2 Series shares the same overall platform across all three models, so the tractor's dimensions remain consistent whether you choose the YM225, YM232, or YM238. Despite starting at just 24.4 horsepower, the YM2 is a substantial compact tractor, with enough size and weight to provide a stable platform for loader and implement work.

Some overall dimensions were not provided in Yanmar's original product information, so Tractor Bob's measured the YM2 directly to give buyers a better idea of its actual size.

The folding ROPS reduces the tractor's height from approximately 89 inches to 64 inches, which can make a significant difference when storing the tractor in a garage, barn, or other structure with limited overhead clearance.
