I recently returned from the World AG Expo, where I saw everything from robotic sprayers and autonomous conversion kits to subcompact cab tractors and million-dollar combines that can harvest hundreds of acres in a single day. While the high-tech and specialized equipment was impressive, I was there to focus on the tractors most people actually buy—the versatile compact models that offer the perfect balance of size, power, and price.
In this article, we’ll take a close look at the Top 5 Compact Tractors in 2026 in the 40–60 hp range that stood out at the Expo, plus one strong bonus tractor that wasn’t on display. I’ll also provide a side-by-side comparison so you can decide which one best fits your needs. These rankings reflect my personal opinion based on what I saw and evaluated at the show. If your favorite brand didn’t make the list, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad tractor—just that these five impressed me the most.

JOHN DEERE 4 SERIES
John Deere featured a massive booth at the Expo, with a dedicated section for their compact and subcompact tractors. While both the 3 Series and 4 Series fall into the 40–60 hp category, the 4 Series offers more power and capability, making it the focus here.
The 4 Series spans 43–75 hp and is available with either a hydrostatic transmission (dual pedals, no shifting) or a PowerReverser gear transmission with a clutchless forward/reverse lever. All models under 75 hp use reliable Yanmar diesel engines that are EU Stage 5 compliant and deliver best-in-class fuel efficiency. Fuel capacity ranges from 12.5 gallons on the R models to 15 gallons on the premium M models. The tractors also come with a strong 6-year/2,000-hour warranty.
The Category 1 three-point hitch offers a lift capacity of 2,500 lbs, while PTO horsepower ranges from 32–60 hp depending on the model. The front loader provides up to 2,400 lbs of lift capacity at the pivot point, with a maximum lift height of 110 inches and 86 inches of dump clearance. John Deere’s Quick-Attach system ensures easy implement changes, and front remotes are available as an option.
The 4 Series includes thoughtful features such as LoadMatch™, which automatically adjusts ground speed to prevent engine stalling. Pricing for a loader-equipped tractor typically falls between $41,000 and $63,000, depending on the model, loader choice, and whether you opt for a cab.
Final Thoughts: John Deere remains an iconic American brand with excellent reliability, strong resale value, and a vast dealer network. However, many buyers note the premium pricing and higher repair costs. The 4 Series is a well-built, feature-rich tractor, but it isn’t the strongest value in this segment.
YANMAR YT3 & YM3 SERIES
Yanmar’s booth, supported by their California dealer Kaweah Equipment, showcased why the company has earned a reputation for class-leading compact equipment. While John Deere uses Yanmar engines, these are entirely different tractors. Yanmar offers two distinct lines in the 40–60 hp range: the affordable, workhorse YM3 Series and the flagship YT3 Series.
The YT3 Series features components that are fully designed, engineered, and manufactured in-house by Yanmar. The YM Series is built on a TYM platform to a Yanmar specification, uses Yanmar engines, and is backed by the same industry-leading 10-year powertrain warranty.
Both series range from 42–60 hp. The YM models come with a straightforward synchronized gear-drive transmission, while the YT3 introduces Yanmar’s patented I-HMT (Integrated Hydrostatic-Mechanical Transmission)—the first of its kind on a tractor under 60 hp. This transmission combines the ease of a hydrostatic with the power and efficiency of a gear drive. Both tractors hold 13 gallons of fuel and reach a top speed of approximately 18 mph.
The Category 1 three-point hitch (with CAT II compatibility on the YM) delivers over 2,700 lbs of lift capacity. The front loader offers 2,500 lbs of lift at the pivot point, a 113-inch lift height, and 88 inches of dump clearance. Both loaders feature a universal skid-steer quick-attach system and quick-release design.
The YT3 stands out with premium features including anti-stall, auto-throttle, throttle boost, and A/B modes. Pricing starts at $34,000–$40,000 for the YM Series and $45,000–$60,000 for the YT3 Series (with additional discounts currently available at Tractor Bob’s).
Final Thoughts: Yanmar tractors are exceptionally reliable, and the 10-year warranty backs that reputation. The YT3 Series, with its unique I-HMT transmission, is my pick for the best tractor under 60 hp. The only notable drawback is Yanmar’s more limited dealer network compared to some competitors.
KIOTI DK SERIES
Kioti displayed its full lineup at the Expo. As the North American brand of South Korea’s Daedong Industrial, Kioti is best known for its compact tractors. The DK Series is a strong contender in the 40–60 hp range.
These tractors offer 40–58 hp with a choice of synchro-shuttle or hydrostatic transmissions. Daedong manufactures the engines and most powertrain components in-house. Fuel capacity is 11–12 gallons, with top speeds between 17–19 mph. Kioti backs the DK Series with a 6-year unlimited-hour warranty.
The Category 1 three-point hitch provides 2,716 lbs of lift capacity, and models with “SE” in the name include more premium standard features and telescoping stabilizers. A unique convenience feature allows you to raise and lower the three-point from the rear of the tractor. The front loader delivers up to 2,660 lbs of lift capacity at the pivot point, with a 109-inch lift height and 81.7-inch dump clearance. It uses a universal skid-steer quick-attach system.
The DK Series is notably heavy for its class (3,300–3,800 lbs base weight), giving it excellent stability. Pricing with a loader typically ranges from $35,000–$52,000.
Final Thoughts: If you prefer the Kioti platform but want a different color, note that Bobcat 4000 Series tractors are built on the same base, with Bobcat’s own loader tuned for superior breakout (digging) force.
KUBOTA L60 & L70 SERIES
Kubota offers three main options in this horsepower range, but for this comparison we’ll focus on the L60 and the all-new L70 Series (the MX Series is larger and closer to a utility tractor).
Both the L60 and L70 are fully built by Kubota and span 37–62 hp (L60) and 37–60 hp (L70). The L60 is available with hydrostatic (HST), Glide Shift (GST), or fully synchronized (FST) transmissions, while the L70 offers a smooth 3-range hydrostatic. Fuel capacity is approximately 13.5 gallons, and top speeds range from 16–18.5 mph. Kubota provides a 6-year/2,000-hour warranty for non-commercial use.
The Category 1 three-point hitch offers lift capacities from 2,646–2,976 lbs. The loaders vary by model, with the premium L70 loader reaching 117 inches of lift height and 2,450 lbs of capacity. All loaders feature universal skid-steer quick-attach and quick-release designs.
The L70 Series shines in comfort and modern controls, with streamlined dashboards, premium cabs, and even the option to integrate cameras viewable from the dash. Pricing for loader-equipped L60/L70 models typically falls between $41,000–$63,000.
MASSEY FERGUSON 2E & 2M
Massey Ferguson has been selling tractors in the U.S. since 1957 and maintains a solid reputation for practical, reliable machines. In the 40–60 hp segment, the 2E (economy) and 2M (heavy-duty) series are built on the Iseki platform and powered by Iseki 4-cylinder turbo diesel engines.
Both series range from 48–60 hp and offer hydrostatic transmissions with three ranges, plus gear options (8x8 synchro-shuttle on the 2E and 12x12 power shuttle on the 2M). They feature a generous 14-gallon fuel tank and top speeds of 15–18 mph.
The three-point hitch is compatible with both CAT 1 and CAT 2 implements. Lift capacity is 2,650 lbs on the 2E and over 3,400 lbs on the 2M. Loaders provide a 111-inch lift height and over 95 inches of dump clearance, with roughly 1,800 lbs of lift capacity to full height and a universal skid-steer quick-attach system.
Pricing ranges from $34,000–$56,000 depending on model and cab configuration.
Final Thoughts: Massey Ferguson compact tractors are straightforward and no-nonsense. Many longtime owners (including my grandpa) speak highly of their reliability and simplicity.
BAD BOY 50 SERIES
One of the strongest values in this class isn’t always at the big shows but has become very popular with Tractor Bob’s customers: the Bad Boy 50-Series.
Built on a TYM platform with upgrades to the front axle and loader, the 50-Series delivers 2,700 lbs of loader capacity and 3,306 lbs at the three-point. It comes loaded with standard features including rear hydraulics, work lights, mirrors, and a heated suspension seat. The cab option is spacious and includes an Alpine stereo system.
Available in 48 hp or 55 hp with either hydrostatic or synchro-shuttle transmissions, these tractors use reliable Kukje 4-cylinder diesel engines. Fuel capacity is 11.8 gallons, and they carry a 6-year/2,000-hour powertrain warranty.
Pricing is excellent: $30,900–$45,500 with a loader, and you can even get a 55 hp cab model with a backhoe for around $53,000.
Final Thoughts: If you’re considering a TYM tractor, the Bad Boy 50-Series is worth a close look. It offers outstanding performance and value, plus the benefit of an American brand with strong implement support.
