Yanmar SA-425 & SA-325 Review: Best 24 HP Compact Tractor in 2026

Few compact tractor lineups have earned the reputation that the Yanmar SA Series enjoys. Ranked number one in product quality among tractor manufacturers for six consecutive years, Yanmar has long been considered a benchmark for reliability, engineering, and operator-focused design. With the release of the updated SA-425 and SA-325, Yanmar raises the bar again—introducing standard features that are rarely found in this horsepower class.

Designed for property owners, small-acreage farmers, and professionals who demand long-term dependability, the SA-425 and SA-325 combine refined ergonomics with rugged capability in a compact footprint.

Engine

Engine, Transmission, and Powertrain Excellence

At the heart of both tractors is a Yanmar-built engine, the 3TNV80F. This 3-cylinder, liquid-cooled diesel produces 23.9 horsepower and is engineered to be compact, fuel-efficient, and exceptionally durable. Known for low noise, minimal vibration, and strong high-altitude performance, this engine reflects Yanmar’s reputation as one of the world’s premier diesel manufacturers. Fuel capacity across the SA Series is 6.1 gallons, providing ample runtime for a full day’s work.

Engine access is one of the SA Series’ standout strengths. A single-piece hood flips open to expose filters and fluid fill points, and the entire hood can be removed in minutes by unplugging the headlights and releasing a single pin and strut. This design provides nearly unrestricted access to the engine bay, making routine maintenance refreshingly simple.

Power is delivered through a Kanazaki hydrostatic transmission, a Yanmar subsidiary specifically tasked with designing transmissions that pair seamlessly with Yanmar engines. Because the engine and transmission are engineered together, power delivery is smooth, efficient, and optimized for long-term reliability.

The front axle is also Yanmar-designed, featuring four-wheel drive capability, oscillation for improved traction, and impressive maneuverability. With nearly a 60-degree steering angle, the tractor achieves an exceptionally tight 8.5-foot turning radius, while still maintaining 12.3 inches of front axle ground clearance.

Backing it all is one of the strongest warranties in the industry: a 10-year powertrain warranty, included standard on the SA-425, SA-325, and all Yanmar tractors.

Three-Point Hitch, PTOs, and Hydraulic Capability

Despite their compact size, the SA-425 and SA-325 deliver strong implement performance. Both models feature a Category 1 three-point hitch with a maximum lift capacity of 1,209 pounds—impressive for a tractor in the 24-horsepower class.

The tractors are equipped with both a mid PTO and a rear PTO, allowing them to run belly mowers as well as traditional three-point implements. The mid PTO operates at 554 RPM, while the rear PTO runs at 2,057 RPM. Notably, Yanmar offers a range of hay equipment—including a mini hay baler—that these tractors are designed to operate efficiently.

Hydraulic performance is well-matched to the class, with 3.7 gallons per minute dedicated to steering and 4.3 gallons per minute available for implements. A hydraulic sight glass makes it easy to monitor fluid levels at a glance, and a standard drawbar adds utility straight from the factory.

One of the most significant upgrades to the 2024 SA-325 and SA-425 is the inclusion of standard rear hydraulic remotes. This feature dramatically expands the tractor’s capabilities, allowing operators to run hydraulic top links, side links, and a wide range of hydraulic-powered three-point attachments. With hydraulic top and side links installed, operators gain precise, on-the-fly control over box blade angles, depth, and tilt—transforming grading and earthmoving tasks.

Yanmar-designed hydraulic links make it quick and easy to swap between hydraulic and manual configurations, and pairing the tractor with a quick hitch further simplifies attachment changes.

Up front, a standard quick-release loader comes equipped with a quick-disconnect bucket, making it easy to switch to pallet forks, grapples, and other compatible attachments. The loader offers a maximum lift capacity of 1,200 pounds and a lift height of 79 inches.

For those needing excavation capability, an optional backhoe is available, offering a 76-inch digging depth, 150-degree swing arc, 180-degree bucket rotation, and a reach of up to 102 inches.

Side Profile

Operator Station and Ergonomics

Yanmar places a strong emphasis on operator comfort, and it shows throughout the SA Series operator station. The tractor features a high-back seat with armrests mounted on a spring suspension platform, with fore-and-aft adjustment for proper positioning. When equipped with the optional backhoe, the seat swivels to accommodate rear operation. The flat floorboard design provides generous foot-room, with only a slight center hump, making long operating sessions more comfortable. Rubber floor mats come standard, adding both comfort and durability.

Controls are logically arranged and intuitive. On the operator’s right side are the rear hydraulic controls, three-point hitch lever, storage compartment, and loader joystick. The joystick includes a built-in lock and is positioned directly in front of the armrest for natural operation. Additional storage, a 12-volt outlet, cup holder, PTO selectors, and range controls are also conveniently located.

Because the SA-425 and SA-325 are hydrostatic tractors, operation is straightforward. Two pedals—one for forward and one for reverse—eliminate the need for gear shifting, making these tractors approachable for new operators while still satisfying experienced users. Lighting is comprehensive, with headlights, taillights, and hazard lights standard. The hazard lights double as turn signals, and the headlights offer both high and low beam settings. The steering column is clean and ergonomic, housing light controls, throttle, ignition, and a clear digital display that provides service reminders, fuel level information, and system notifications.

Front

Dimensions, Tires, and Frame Design

The SA-425 measures 105.8 inches in length, 54.1 inches in width, and weighs approximately 1,830 pounds. The wheelbase spans 63 inches, contributing to stability while maintaining compact maneuverability.

Buyers can choose between R3 turf tires or R4 industrial tires. Rear tire sizing differs slightly between models, with the SA-425 running larger rear tires than the SA-325, which offers a modest cost savings for buyers who don’t require the added size.

The tractor’s frame design integrates the engine, transmission, and axles into a cohesive structure that enhances rigidity and longevity. Skid plates come standard, offering additional protection when working in rough terrain.

For rear implements, five-foot attachments such as box blades and rotary cutters are typically recommended, though six-foot implements may be suitable in certain applications depending on conditions and operator experience.
